WHAT IS SLABSTIX?
Slabstix rustic furniture often starts as some form of salvaged wood that has been chosen for it's shape or the characteristics of color and grain. The pieces are then kiln dried to approximately 7 persent moisture content. The drying process prevents possible warping.
From the rough Cedar, Sumac, Cherry or Apple wood, pieces are selected to form the table top or chair seat, the legs, shelves and supports, depending on the item.
Each piece of furniture is as unique as the pieces of wood picked and there is a story behind each piece of wood.
Once assembled, the table, chair, bench or stool is prepared for a DuraVar™ finish. The finish not only protects the wood from dirt and stains but enhances the color and grain for a truly "rustic" look.
THE CUSTOM PROCESS
Each piece of Slabstix furniture is unique. Often a visitor to the Slabstix workshop sees an interesting piece of unfinished wood. It may be from a Cedar, Apple, or Sumac tree. What may attract the visitor is the wood's color, shape or grain. The process usually starts with that simple piece of wood. Then let your imagination and Glenn's talent, turn that shape into a table, chair, bench, or mantel.
WHO IS SLABSTIX?
In 1996 Glenn Wolyniak began creating "slabstix" furniture as a hobby.
"The most challenging aspect in the furniture building process, says Glenn, is getting the finish as uniform as possible."
Glenn recognizes the importance of a quality finish, after-all, he spent years as an auto body painter where the quality of the finish meant the difference between an "also ran" and a quality Show Car.
WHERE IS SLABSTIX?
Glenn's Benzie County neighbors were some of his first customers but today you will find Slabstix Furniture in homes from Traverse City to Topeka . . . Michigan to Florida.
This durable, clean, well finished furniture can be found in homes around Crystal Lake and Platte Lake in Benzie County; around Arcadia in Manistee County; in summer retreats in Leelanau and Grand Traverse County and beyond.
If you have a traditional rustic log home and are looking for some "up-north decor" furniture or room accents or just a casual room that could use a special touch, then Stabstix Rustic Furniture may be the what you are looking for.
Glenn has a number of pre-built items at his shop that are for sale, but he also does custom orders. Often, a customer visits the work shop that result in a special order.
